Debt Collectors Being Investigated

Debt can be overwhelming and dealing with debt collectors can be a nightmare. Imagine having a debt collector tell you that you will be arrested if you don’t pay your debt now, or having a debt collector intimidate your loved ones in the same manner. This is what three large, nation-wide debt collection agencies have done to consumers. Read more here.

Northern Resolution Group, LLC, Enhanced Acquisitions, LLC, and Delray Capital, LLC purchased millions of dollars in defaulted consumer debt then proceeded to use unsavory business practices to collect. Now they are being investigated and sued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the State of New York for engaging in a host of illegal acts in collecting debts. These companies are being investigated for impersonating law-enforcement and/or court officials, threatening consumers with arrest or legal action the agencies had no intention of taking, and routinely added $200 to each debt they acquired [regardless of whether the underlying contracts or applicable law permitted it] thus inflating the debt amount.

Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, debt collectors are regulated on when, where and how a debt can be collected. There are State and Federal laws which protect your rights against debt collectors that unlawfully invade your privacy.
